For Anisha Mehta, nothing is more exciting than the challenges and intricacies of the industry. Read how she has established herself as Graduate Engineer Trainee in Bechtel India Pvt. Ltd.

Q1. Kindly tell us about the work culture, environment and incentives of working at Bechtel ?

Ans: Bechtel follows an open door policy, which means that you can talk to anyone regarding any issues sans any hesitation. People here are really helpful. Since the company is over 100 years old, there are procedures and instructions for everything. Everyone works in an orderly way. It is a system oriented company. The New Delhi office recently shifted from its 8 hours per day schedule to a 9/80 schedule where we work for 9 hours every day and get alternate Friday off. The work-life balance is awesome here.

Q2. Please tell us about scope and roles available in other Instrumentation and Control companies(Both Public and Private) in India [kindly mention companies, job profiles et al.] ?

Ans: In private, we have Triune, Technip, GS E&C, SK E&C, Lanco, L&T, CB&I, and Fluor amongst many others. In the other category, GAIL, HPCL, IOCL, BPCL, EIL, NTPC, and SAIL are some of the better known ones .You always join as a Engineer trainee. In Bechtel, you move from an Engineer to a Senior Engineer and further to an Engineering Group Supervisor and so on.

Q3. What all foreign opportunities (Job Profiles and/or Company Name) an ICE engineer should look out for ? Also mention career path which an ICE graduate should follow to shift to foreign roles?

Ans: In general, depending upon your knowledge and performance, companies can send you on assignments outside India. There may be field opportunities or opportunities to work from some other office in other countries. This is generally the scenario in EPCs (Engineering, Procurement and Construction). Depending on your experience and requirement, you can transition to other profiles, if you want to move outside India.

Q4. Please mention any specific course, certification, skill, field of knowledge which an NSITian should explore while being in college (considering ICE have out – dated syllabus) which helps in securing good job profiles right out of the college.

Ans: I would like to stress upon the importance of a field internship. EPCs do their work from offices, so practical exposure is less. So whenever you get an opportunity, please go to a site and observe. Apart from the core subjects, put extra efforts in studying about DCS, PLC, control valves, working of different types of power plants, role of instrumentation in power plants and refineries, technologies such as HART, wireless HART, foundation fieldbus, etc. Youtube has many videos on the working of instruments, which will help bring clarity in your concepts.
